Have you ever noticed small veins bulging through the skin? Then you should know that it is not a simple cosmetic defect. Luckily, there is a clear medical explanation.
What are spider veins?

The name is rather self-explanatory. If to speak about medical terminology, this condition is called couperose or telangiectasia. Its presence suggests that there has been a disturbance of blood circulation in certain groups of blood vessels. Their walls expanded, so they became more visible. When the rupture of these walls occurs, it visually resembles a “cobweb” of capillaries. Visible veins are called varicose veins, so it is definitely not a merely cosmetic defect.
Who is at risk?
Even healthy people can have spider veins. However, the risk is higher for:

- people who work in the open air;
- people who spend a lot of time in a sitting position;
- people who abuse alcohol;
- pregnant women;
- the elderly;
- people who suffer from dermatomyositis or lupus erythematosus.
Reasons and Symptoms

The reasons for varicose veins aren’t always the same. In some cases, the absence or weakness of valves in the veins can cause poor venous circulation and lead to varicose veins. Valves inside the veins usually act to prevent blood from going in the opposite direction from the deep veins and heart. The walls of blood vessels can also become weaker, which leads to an increase in the volume of blood in the veins, resulting in varicose veins.
Some other reasons for the varicose veins:
- phlebitis (veins inflammation);
- blood clot;
- congenital vascular anomalies;
- vein diseases.

- dull pain;
- tired legs;
- a feeling of compression in veins.
If this problem bothers you with any of these symptoms, under no circumstances should you ignore it! It is important to see a doctor, otherwise, there may be severe complications. Some people may develop skin ulcers. This can lead to a soft tissue infection. Some people with varicose veins may also have blood clots inside the veins (superficial thrombophlebitis). There are also cases of bleeding from varicose veins.
What can be done at home?
It is never recommended to self-medicate, therefore, it is better to discuss any measures with a doctor. If you want to start treatment at home, there are several effective ways.

Regular exercises help improve blood circulation in the legs. Exercising also helps to lower the blood pressure, which is another factor causing varicose veins. We advise taking up swimming, yoga, walking, or cycling.
The following products rich in potassium will help to prevent varicose veins: almonds, pistachio nuts, lentils, white beans, potatoes, leafy vegetables, whole grains (fiber). Don’t forget about the products containing flavonoids: sweet pepper, spinach, broccoli, citrus fruits, grapes, cherries, apples, blueberries, and garlic.
3. Proper clothes

Don’t wear clothes that are too tight, because they can negatively affect the blood circulation. It is also worth giving up high heels. If there is such a need, try to reduce it to a minimum.
4. Keep your feet up
You should try to keep your legs elevated if you spend a lot of time in a sitting position. You can use the auxiliary chair or footrest. If it is possible, lie down on a couch and lift your legs once in a while.
As you can see, spider veins require your attention as soon as possible. If you have this problem, don’t ignore it. With necessary preventative measures, you can ensure yourself a happy and healthy future!
