Many people are still afraid to fly on an airplane. Some fear operational failures, others – bad weather conditions. But all of them are equally horrified by the idea of a plane crash.

When you are on board a plane, don’t let any phobias or prejudices take over you. That said, it wouldn’t hurt to know how to act in an emergency situation.
American pilot Dave Inch shared tips that could help you survive a plane crash.
What to do in the event of a plane crash
1. Put away your phone

While taking pictures or videos of what is happening, you may fail to notice something vital. Life is immeasurably more precious than likes and views. A smartphone is the last thing to think about in an emergency.
2. Listen to the crew

Even if there’s chaos and panic on board, don’t ignore the instructions of the flight attendants and pilots. Don’t rush to the exits immediately after a successful landing – stay in your places and wait for instructions. Also, don’t try to open the door or the porthole on your own without the explicit instruction of a flight attendant.
3. Know the location of the emergency exits

Make sure you do it before take-off. Some of them can’t be used, for example, in water landings. Make a point of that. Just in case, count the number of rows to the nearest emergency exit, so you can get to it by touch if the cabin is engulfed in smoke.
4. Remove all non-essentials

A belt, tie, high heeled shoes – they can catch onto something and you may fall down. Also, remove all items from your pockets – they can hurt you in a fall or other impact.
5. Be prepared in the event of a fire
If you understand that there is a risk of a fire on board the plane, prepare a piece of cloth (for example, a scarf), preferably damp, in advance. During evacuation, stay as low as possible and breathe through this cloth.
6. Don’t inflate the life jacket immediately
If the plane starts to fill with water, it may get you trapped. In such situations, it is better to remove the vest and hold on to it. Inflate it when you are already at an exit.
Although the risk of getting into a plane crash is extremely small, all travelers should know these tips.
