The airport administration immediately noted that the imprudent thief wasn’t a Ryanair’s employee and had been on a training period for only three days.

The police arrived at the airport quickly, questioned the accused, got a statement from the witness, and returned the stolen property to the victims. The man was immediately fired, and the case went to trial.

Unfortunately, such cases of timely justice are exceptions to the rules. The loss of valuable things is usually noticed at the stage when it isn’t possible to find the thief.

  1. Always take all valuable things (documents, money, jewelry, appliances) with you in hand luggage. If it isn’t possible, make a list of the suitcase’ contents before handing over the luggage so that in case of theft you can contact the police.
  2. Even if your bag is equipped with a lock, pack it in polyethylene when you arrive at the airport. However, you should be prepared that when the X-ray scan checks the contents of your suitcase, you may be asked to open it.
  3. Before handing in the luggage, take a picture of what it looks like. you can use it as a proof in case it disappears entirely.
  4. Try to make sure that your bag is different from the others. It should better be of bright color and unusual shape. In case it is an ordinary one, tie a few bright ribbons or use notable stickers so you can recognize your luggage faster.
  5. Before checking in the luggage, leave a barely noticeable mark in the zipper – a string, a piece of fishing line or a toothpick. Check it upon arrival: if it is gone, immediately contact the airport security service.

Of course, there are expert thieves who won’t be stopped with locks or polyethylene. Although, these simple tips will help you avoid airports thefts with a higher probability. Do you have your own proven ways to protect your luggage? Share them in the comments.
