It was a hot day in Tijuana, Mexico. Tina Turner was expecting the most romantic night of her life.

At that time, she was only 22 years old, and she had just married blues musician, Ike Turner.

The young singer was wondering what surprise her new husband had prepared for their wedding night; there could have been many options for what should have been the most romantic evening of her life.

Ike surprised Tina indeed! More than half a century later, the singer revealed the truth:

You see, so long as Ike was in down-and-dirty Tijuana, he wanted to have fun, his kind of fun. So he took me to a whorehouse. On my wedding night.

I’ve never, ever, told anyone this story before. I was too embarrassed. What kind of bridegroom takes his brand-new wife to a live pornographic sex show, right after their marriage ceremony?

Entering a brothel, Tina was too afraid to leave for fear of enraging her husband, so she was forced to watch a live sex show.

At that time, a young woman from Tennessee, who grew up in a Baptist family, was married for only a few hours.

There I sat, in this filthy place, watching Ike out of the corner of my eye, wondering: ‘Does he really like this? How could he?’

It was all so ugly. The male performer was unattractive and seemingly impotent, and the girl — well, let’s just say that what was on display was more gynaecological than erotic.

Tina felt miserable. She was in tears, but there was no salvation. The couple couldn’t leave until Ike was ready, and he was having a great time.

The experience was so disturbing that I just scratched it out. By the time we got back to Los Angeles, I’d created a completely different scenario in my head — a romantic elopement.

The next day, the young wife bragged to others:

‘Guess what? Oh, Ike took me to Tijuana. We got married yesterday!’

Currently, the 78-year-old singer, who over the past five years has suffered many health issues – cancer, stroke and kidney failure – enjoys sitting in the garden of her Swiss castle, reminiscing about how she overcame her demeaning former experiences and the wonderful life that came after divorce from Ike.

Officially, the couple broke up in 1978 (16 years after the wedding). After that, Tina resumed her solo career, reaching record sales of more than $2.5 million, which overshadowed all of Ike’s musical projects.

Perhaps, it was small revenge for all the humiliation the singer experienced in the marriage.
