Too Tall For A Royal: Diana Bowed Her Head To Be On The Same Level With Companions

Date August 14, 2019

Diana wanted to become the "queen of people's hearts", she once said in an interview she gave after her separation from Prince Charles. Could she know back then that she would succeed and, moreover, become everyone's idol and role model? But how did a shy 20-year-old girl manage to become an icon for millions of people?

Pretty easy: she knew how to make people around her feel equal, rather than be intimidated by her status or title. She was as considerate of people working for her as she was of her own sons. Perhaps you could say the key to her success was her wholeheartedness.

Diana changed the way people felt about the royal family, having shown that the royals are just like everyone else. She was open for communication and gladly met people and hugged children. She answered questions honestly and wisely, and broke the protocol that forbade royals from being in physical contact with less noble people.

Diana was one of the first to visit hospitals and lazarets without fear of being infected with some disease. She literally walked through a minefield and shook hands with people who had been diagnosed with AIDS and HIV. All of this without wearing rubber gloves or any other protection. How many of us are capable of not judging the sick and recoiling at their touch? Diana visited slums, foster homes, and care facilities. And finally, she was genuine. Lady Di openly talked about her unhappy marriage, what the royal family is really like, and raised her children the way she wanted to.

From the very first public appearances of Princess Diana, everyone noticed that she often gave people she talked to a seemingly sullen look. At first, some of them thought she was just shy. In the beginning of her married life with Charles, she really was scared and confused, but definitely not grumpy as it might have seemed.

According to her biographer, Andrew Morton, it took the princess 6 long years to get fully accustomed to her new role. But even from then on, she continued to bow her head, but for a different reason this time. Diana was quite tall, a fact that forced her to quit ballet classes in the past. She never wore high heels when making a public appearance with Charles, to avoid being taller than him. And she bowed a little before her companions so that they could be on the same level. This was her way of trying to make conversation lighter.

Naturally, not everyone was fond and supportive of Princess Diana, as Camilla had admirers of her own. Lady Di was often considered a victim and Charles was considered an offender. However, his second wife is who the Prince of Wales found happiness with. The independent web portal Write Royalty once wrote about the cult that people created around Princess Di's persona. One of the writers pointed out that this gorgeous woman was just an ordinary person like the rest of us, with her own strengths and weaknesses. We can't disagree. According to him, this royal marriage was doomed because she was young and needed attention, and he was stubborn, bad-tempered and old-fashioned. Diana's flaws have been forgiven. She earned it with her hard work and the open-heartedness with which she spoke about the royal family. Charles, however, is still blamed for her unhappiness.

Our opinion is that 'cult' is way too strong of a word to describe the love for a person who changed the monarchy, but every person is entitled to their own opinion. How long do you think the world will remember Diana and compare her with Camilla?
