Flight Attendants Don’t Drink Tea Or Coffee On The Plane As Water May Contain Certain Harmful Bacteria

Most of us can’t imagine a morning without a cup of coffee or tea, especially if you have an early and long flight. However, few people know that flight attendants offering these drinks to the passengers do not drink them themselves. And you are also advised to think twice before ordering coffee or tea on board an aircraft. Why so?

Anyone who has ever taken an overnight or early flight knows what a test for the body it is. A cup of hot tea or coffee may seem like an excellent way to ease this strain, but crew members are rather skeptical about this idea.

The fact is that the water for hot drinks comes from a tap, not bottles. Not only can it be unpleasant to the taste, but also contain dangerous bacteria. According to an EPA study conducted in 2004, coliform bacteria was found in 15% of approximately 300 aircraft, and in water tanks of two, they found E. coli. Some species of this bacterium can produce toxins, which can damage the kidneys, the central nervous system, and blood.

Nowadays, at least 1 in 8 aircrafts violates the safety standards of water, which is poured from a water filling hose in airports.
Dr. Cedric Spak, an infectious diseases specialist from Baylor University Medical Center (USA), strongly recommends that people with a weakened immune system avoid hot drinks on board the aircraft. He also noted that parents should think twice before filling a baby’s bottle with airplane tap water.

One can never be sure that the water storing tank in an airplane is clean and disinfected. Of course, it is cleaned, but even the crew has no idea when and how.

It may be difficult to keep your energy up in an early flight without coffee or tea, but health should always be your first priority. The next time, instead of ordering hot drinks on the plane, go for bottled water.
