Here's How To Protect A Child's Skin From Irritants

For most children, a home is a refuge where they can play with their toys and spend time with their pets. At the same time, your house is a place where there are many irritants that can affect children. These small sentient beings have very sensitive skin and their immune system is not fully developed, so they may not react as well to irritants in their environment as adults.

According to Francesca Fusco, a New York dermatologist, many skin irritants hide in the products that are used every day. Among the products that are likely to cause skin problems such as itching, redness or other skin irritations in sensitive children, the doctor pinpoints the following products:

1, Laundry detergents and fabric softeners.

Fragrances and additives in laundry products can cause skin problems. While fabric softener is particularly allergenic and can cause eczema.

To avoid suffering from these problems, Francesca Fusco suggests either using perfume-free laundry products or adding a little vinegar to the final rinse that will act as a softener.

2. Scented products.

Although soaps, shampoos and lotions smell very pleasant, they contain substances that can cause allergies and skin irritations in children. "Fragrances usually comes from a mixture of chemicals added to the products," explains Sarah L. Stein, pediatric dermatologist at Comer Children's Hospital at the University of Chicago. The doctor recommends using alternatives without perfume which must be indicated on the labels.

3. Hard soaps.

Bar soaps that children often use to wash their face and body as well as antimicrobial soaps very often contain abrasive detergents that can cause itching.

4. Various aerosols.

Although they do not directly affect your children, air fresheners, incense, candles and other products that produce vapors can irritate the skin of toddlers. To avoid this problem, doctors advise you to minimize the use of these products, especially when children are nearby.

And that's not all. According to Francesca Fusco, some exotic fruits and organic products as well as pets and their care products can also become a cause of skin irritation in children.

The best way to protect your children from irritants is to eliminate allergens from your home. However, if your child has already had a reaction to an irritant, you should never panic, but try to determine the exact cause of the irritation or itching. Once you have identified the allergen, remove it from your household. Then, if the reaction is not too severe, you can apply a topical anti-itch lotion containing menthol to the irritated skin. However, if your child has a fever or signs of infection (such as redness, blisters or leaking fluid), talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

Follow these simple tips and your child will not suffer from skin irritation. And do not forget that it is always easier to prevent than to treat any problem.
