5 Mistakes That May Lead To Food Poisoning

Nutrition is one of our basic needs as human beings. However, when the time comes to cook and prepare food, it's always important to take a few precautions. According to the WHO, 420 thousand people die every year due to food poisoning.

There are several situations which can trigger this kind of poisoning, which is why we leave you with 6 mistakes we've all committed at least once. It's time to never make them again.

1. Tasting food to check if it's still okay to eat

Sometimes, we're not sure if a stew we've been storing is still good to eat. To check, we give it a taste. This is a big mistake. If the food is already bad, you can get very sick just by trying a little. It's important to remember that the bacteria that cause food poisoning have no odor, taste, or color.

2. Not washing your hands or washing them incorrectly

When you prepare food for yourself and your family, you must wash your hands before doing so. Many people don't do that. Plus, you need to rub your hands together with soap for approximately 20 seconds in order to wash your hands properly.

3. Reusing bags which had meat in them

These bags become a breeding ground for bacteria since meat generally releases a little blood or other liquid. If you must use the bag, first wash it with boiling water.

4. Not changing sponges or dish towels

Among the most contaminated objects in the home are kitchen sponges and dish towels. If you don't change them frequently, they can transmit bacteria which can cause infections. It's recommended to change them every two to three weeks.

5. Not checking the fridge temperature

When the fridge isn't cold enough, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria. Most fridges come with a thermometer, so make sure it never reaches above 39° Fahrenheit.

By following these tips, you'll avoid putting your health and that of your family at risk. While you might not always get sick, it is a high risk by committing the above mistakes.
