It's very common to hear about how dangerous certain foods are for our health. This is especially true for foods high in fat and junk food. The risk of heart disease or diabetes can be the wake up call that many people need in order to change their lifestyle. Others simply try to follow a healthier lifestyle.

If we were to tell you to think about healthy foods, then fruits and vegetables would almost certainly come to mind. Sometimes, it's tempting to think that we can consume large quantities of these foods because they're healthy. However, in large quantities, some healthy foods can become toxic without you realizing it.

So, here we introduce you to five foods which you probably didn't know are toxic if you consume too much.

1. Chard

Many consider it to be a natural detox, and its properties do offer this benefit. Thanks to its high oxalic acid content, if more than 6.5 pounds are consumed per day, it can cause low blood pressure, abdominal pain, and even convulsions.

2. Brazil nuts

These nuts are so delicious they can be addictive. Well, that's where the danger lies. These are rich in selenium, which when consumed in large quantities can result in upset stomach, hair and nail loss, and extreme fatigue. Take care not to eat more than 5 Brazil nuts per day.

3. Green potatoes

As delicious as potatoes may be, it's better to wait long enough for them to become mature. If you consume more than a pound of green potatoes, it could result in vomiting, diarrhea, or even a heart attack. Why? The answer lies in an alkaloid called solanine, which is present in potatoes.

4. Nutmeg

Returning to the theme of nuts, we know how delicious it is to cover our desserts with nutmeg. However, consuming more than two tablespoons per day can be very toxic. This is due to the fact that it contains myristicin, which in large quantities can cause headaches and even hallucinations. It's very dangerous.

5. Water

Nothing in the world is as refreshing as water. Doctors, nutritionists, healers, our grandmothers, everybody recommends drinking as much water as possible. That's why it's not unusual for us to have doubts when they tell us that drinking too much water can be harmful for our health.

The fact is that consuming more than 74 ounces of water if you're a woman, or 101 ounces if you're a man, can dilute the sodium levels in your blood. This can bring about terrible health consequences such as nausea, headaches, and as hard as it may be to believe, deterioration of brain function.

It isn't about ceasing to eat these foods, since many of them contain essential nutrients for the human body. It's just about keeping the quantity in mind when it comes time to eat, because as seen above, it's proven that everything in excess is bad for us.
