The world of medicine is full of surprises and cases that aren’t described in books. This is when doctors have to rely on their knowledge, experience, as well as luck.
A Colombian woman named Monica Vega had a normal pregnancy, according to routine medical check-ups, but on the 7th month, the doctors noticed that her baby had an extra umbilical cord that connected the baby to a foreign body inside of her.

This particular case is called fetus in fetu, or parasitic twin, and occurs due to a failure in the formation of the zygote during the first weeks of gestation. When the cells of the twins are not divided at the right time, this causes the malformation of one of the embryos.

While one embryo’s development remains unaffected, the other one stops forming as an embryo, as in this case of a fetus inside the baby.

Fortunately, on her 1st day in this world, baby Itzamara had a cesarean to remove her twin. The intervention did not have any complications and this incident had zero impact on both the little girl’s and her mother’s health.

There was a similar case but with a more favorable outcome. Jami Marie, an expectant mother, was warned that one of her babies was threatening the life of the other and had to be removed. The woman ignored the doctors and delivered two babies!
The human body indeed works in mysterious ways!
