Until recently it was believed that the approximate number system (ANS) was responsible for how skilled in math someone would be from birth. However, in recent studies, it has been found that it is the practice of this science that makes the system develop better during life.
To challenge your calculation skills, we offer you this interesting and seemingly easy puzzle, the key to which lies in the order. Can you find the result of the following problem? We leave you with a clue: the result is neither 1 nor 12. Go ahead!
Have you figured it out? Not yet? Take your time. Think carefully; it's not that complicated if you pay attention to the details.
Are you ready to see the answer? Here it goes:
The result is 30. Why? Very simple, as mentioned before, the key is the order. In the absence of parenthesis, all multiplications and divisions go first. With this in mind, the first calculation is the multiplication 1 x 0.

Then, 0 is added to remaining numbers. The double 1s that don’t have any plus sign in between are considered to be 11s, therefore 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 11 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 11 + 0 + 1 = 30.
Was it difficult? If you want to continue improving your calculation skills and thus exercise your brain, you can do some more math in this article. Don’t let your friends’ heads get rusty either and challenge them with these puzzles!
