5 home remedies to treat symptoms caused by bunions

Here are a few effective home remedies that can relieve pain and inflammation associated with bunions:

1. Turmeric

Curcumin, an active substance found in turmeric, can have an anti-inflammatory effect on bunions caused by arthritis. Here’s how to make a turmeric paste to treat bunions:

  • combine ½ tsp. of turmeric powder with a small amount of olive oil and mix the ingredients well;
  • apply the paste on the bunion and cover it with a bandage;
  • leave it on for about an hour.

Apply the remedy a few times daily if possible.

2. Ice pack

Applying ice to the bunion can bring immediate relief for the pain. Simply put an ice pack wrapped in a towel on the bunion and hold it for 5 to 10 minutes, not longer. Apply the ice pack a few times daily whenever necessary.

3. Foot exercises

There are a few exercises that can help improve flexibility of the affected joint and reduce the pain. Here are three of them:

  1. Take a tennis ball, place it under your foot, and roll it under your toes and then the whole foot, from toes to heel. Continue for a couple of minutes.
  2. Sit on a chair and spread your toes. Then, put your fingers between the toes and bend your toes up and down. Continue for a few minutes.
  3. Stand straight and curl your toes under for a few seconds. Repeat 5 to 7 times.

4. Epsom salt soak

Epsom salt soaks can alleviate the pain and soothe the chafed skin around the bunion. Do the following:

  • dissolve ½ cup of Epsom salt in warm water in a foot tub;
  • soak your feet in the tub for 15-20 minutes;
  • dry your feet thoroughly with a towel afterwards.

5. Massage with oils

Massaging your feet with essential oils, such as lemon oil or lavender oil, or with coconut oil can help relieve the pain and inflammation. Simply massage the bunion thoroughly with the oil of your choice for a few minutes.

A few other ways to make the symptoms caused by bunions less bothersome include the following:

  • place specialized inserts into your shoes to make walking more comfortable;
  • avoid wearing high heels and shoes that fit poorly;
  • wear comfortable shoes that don’t crowd your toes;
  • wear a splint at night to fix the toe in the correct position and reduce discomfort.

If your symptoms persist even after you have tried home remedies and prescribed treatments, consider surgery.
