More and more people are paying for brighter, whiter teeth. But does teeth whitening really work and is it safe?

How can you whiten your teeth?

There are many various ways to whiten your teeth: some of them are quite simple, the others require whitening products from a dentist. Let’s take a detailed look at what happens when you use home remedies to get brighter teeth.

Generally, teeth whitening means washing away or just removing surface stains. In the first case, special chemicals work like a sponge to absorb into your teeth and push strains out. In the second case, the pigment is just removed from tooth material. Professional teeth whitening uses the first option, minimizing possible consequences and showing the best results.

In contrast, homemade remedies use magic properties of certain foods or just mechanically affect tooth enamel.

Home remedies: are they effective?

There is a widespread view that some common foods can help you to get white teeth. They usually include strawberry, orange and banana peels or other products you can find in your kitchen. The only benefit of these remedies is that you can’t harm your teeth using them. However, these natural methods are not effective as they don’t contain special chemicals to change the color of your teeth.

But that’s not all, certain home remedies such as applying baking soda or activated charcoal can damage your teeth and your mouth. At the same time, these methods can really show the results, but they will be far from the professional whitening.

These remedies work like sandpaper. In other words, brushing your teeth with activated charcoal or baking soda can lead to physical wear and tear of the tooth surface. Moreover, in the case of long-term use, it can result in enamel loss and sensitive teeth, when you have to skip cold, hot or sweet foods because they make your teeth hurt.

It is also necessary to mention one method that is something similar to professional whitening. We are talking about hydrogen peroxide. This substance is often used in professional whitening gels and systems.

Hydrogen peroxide can dissolve and push strains out. However, applying this substance at home can cause serious burns in the mouth and severe sensitivity because hydrogen peroxide is very caustic. The mixture should be properly formulated, and it is also very important to check the time. That is hard to do at home, so the best way is to seek assistance from a dental professional.
