Banana is one of the most widely consumed fruits in the world. In addition to being sweet and delicious, bananas are full of nutrients and provide certain benefits for your health. You can eat these fruits on their own or add them to other foods (e.g. cereal, yogurt, or pancakes), and there are plenty of recipes with bananas. Bananas are a nice addition to your breakfast and can serve as an excellent snack. But do not rush to throw away banana peels, because they also have many useful applications:

1. They are good for your digestion.

Bananas are a good source of 2 types of fiber: pectin (decreases as banana ripens) and resistant starch, which is found in unripe bananas. Resistant starch is considered beneficial for your intestinal microflora, and pectin may help prevent the development of colon cancer. Bananas are easy to digest and can help relieve diarrhea.

2. They can help keep your blood sugar stable.

Glycemic index of unripe bananas is about 30; the number for ripened bananas is about 60. It means that they don’t cause extreme fluctuations of blood sugar levels in healthy people. But those who have diabetes should be careful with well-ripened bananas and check their blood sugar levels regularly if they choose to eat these fruits.

3. They may help lose weight.

A medium-sized banana contains just about 100-110 calories. Bananas are rich in fiber and various nutrients; thus, they can make you feel satiated longer. These fruits can also provide you with nutrients before and after exercise.

Bananas are well-known for being rich in potassium, a mineral that can help decrease blood pressure, which in turn reduces the risk of heart problems. Magnesium, another mineral found in bananas, is also vital for heart health.

There are studies that show a link between eating bananas a few times a week and decreased risk of kidney disease. But people who already have kidney problems should eat bananas with reservation.

Bananas, especially if consumed excessively, may pose a risk for certain groups of people:

- women in their third trimester of pregnancy should ask their doctors whether it is safe for them to eat bananas (if they gained a lot of weight, or the baby is too big);

- people who take beta-blockers should be careful with bananas because their potassium levels may rise dangerously high if they eat too many of them;

- potassium from bananas may interfere with other medications such as diuretics;

- individuals with kidney problems should also be wary of consuming too much potassium;

- for some people who suffer from migraines, bananas may be a trigger.
