6 Effective And Natural Home Remedies For Itchy Skin

Your skin can itch for many different reasons, from touching stinging nettles or using harsh soap to having an eczema flare-up.

Regardless of the cause of your itchiness, there are several home remedies you can try to relieve it. Below are six of them:

1. Coconut oil

There is a good reason why everyone is crazy about coconut oil these days. Coconut oil is an excellent natural moisturizer, and it also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Many people with eczema get relief from using coconut oil when the condition flares up.

To use this remedy for itchiness, simply apply some extra virgin coconut oil on the irritated area a few times daily.

2. Oatmeal

The benefits of oatmeal extend far beyond its nutritiousness. Colloidal oatmeal (finely ground oatmeal powder) is often used as a natural remedy for eczema, but anyone dealing with the problem of irritated and itchy skin can benefit from it. If there's no colloidal oatmeal at hand, you can simply use a food processor to grind oat flakes and use them instead.

Taking a lukewarm bath with oatmeal powder can help reduce itchiness. Another way to use this remedy is to make a paste from the oatmeal powder and water and apply it to the affected area for 30 minutes.

3. Aloe vera gel

Aloe vera extract is often used in commercial skin care products, but you can make your own remedy if you have an aloe vera plant at home.

Simply scoop the gel from a fresh aloe vera leaf and apply it to the itching area. Wait 15 minutes until your skin absorbs the gel and wash the area with lukewarm water. You can use this remedy a few times daily.

4. Lemon juice

Lemon juice is an age-old remedy that can act as an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Use it the following way:

  • apply freshly squeezed lemon juice to the itching area using a cotton ball;
  • allow the juice to dry and rinse the area with lukewarm or cool water;
  • repeat the procedure once or twice daily.

5. Ice

To get immediate relief for itchiness, you can apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel on the affected area. Alternatively, you can simply take a cool shower (just not for too long, to avoid hypothermia).

6. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is an indispensable remedy, and it can be found in every home. To use apple cider vinegar to reduce itchiness, do this:

  • apply a small amount of apple cider vinegar on the itching area using a cotton ball;
  • allow it to dry and rinse the area with cool or lukewarm water after half an hour;
  • apply the remedy once or twice every day.

If home remedies and over-the-counter creams or ointments don't help relieve your itching, or if the itching is severe, tell your doctor about it.
