6 home remedies for hemorrhoids

Here are six simple home remedies for hemorrhoids that have been proven to work:

1. Aloe vera

Thanks to its anti-inflammatory effect, aloe vera has been used as a natural remedy for many health issues, which include hemorrhoids. If you have an aloe vera plant at home, you can simply extract the gel from one aloe vera leaf and apply it directly on the affected area. Alternatively, you use commercial pure aloe vera gel without any additives. If you haven't used aloe vera before, do a patch test on a very small area of your skin to make sure you aren't allergic.

2. Ice pack

Applying an ice pack directly on the area can bring instant relief for inflammation and pain. Wrap the ice pack in a towel before application to avoid damaging the skin in the delicate area. Hold the ice pack for 10 minutes and repeat when necessary.

3. Witch hazel

Tannins and oils found in witch hazel can help reduce inflammation brought on by hemorrhoids. Just be sure that the witch hazel preparation you're going to use isn't alcohol-based and doesn't contain other substances that can worsen irritation.

4. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer and anti-inflammatory, so it can be applied topically on the affected area to relieve irritation and itching.

5. Sitz bath

Using a sitz bath is a convenient and safe way to relieve symptoms caused by hemorrhoids. Sitz baths are available at most pharmacies and online. Sitting in warm water in a sitz bath for 15 minutes every time after pooping can bring relief.

6. Compress with Epsom salt and glycerin

This remedy, recommended by the Cleveland Clinic, is a safe and effective way to relieve pain and inflammation associated with hemorrhoids. Here's how to make it:

  • combine Epsom salt and glycerin, 2 tbsp. each;
  • apply this mixture on a gauze pad and put it on the affected area;
  • let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes;
  • repeat the procedure every 4 or 6 hours until the pain subsides.

Tips to ease hemorrhoids symptoms

In addition to the treatments listed above, the following can also help:

  • drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration which can lead to hard stools;
  • eat enough fiber to improve stool consistency and make it easier to pass;
  • avoid straining when making a bowel movement;
  • use the toilet as soon as you feel the urge in order to avoid constipation;
  • use wet wipes (without alcohol, perfume, and other irritants) instead of toilet paper to wipe;
  • wear comfortable, breathable underwear and loose clothing to avoid further irritation in the area.

If home remedies don't help, and if your symptoms persist and get worse, you should see a doctor.
