7 Healthy Foods To Get Rid Of Sugar Cravings

Date January 19, 2018

Sugar cravings are hard to resist. They are especially strong when you’re hungry, upset, or sleep-deprived – that’s when you are more likely to give in and fill up on sweets. But there are some healthy options to curb your cravings that are more nutritious and lower in sugar than what you normally eat when you indulge your sweet tooth.

Here are eight foods that can help you stop craving sugar or even prevent the cravings in the first place:

1. Fruits

Yes, fruits contain sugar, but they are also rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants which makes them a healthy and nutritious snack. A good option to satisfy your cravings are bananas, mandarins, oranges, grapes, avocados, and mangoes. You can eat them on their own or make a fruit salad if you like variety.

2. Berries

Just like in fruits, there’s sugar in berries, but they also contain plenty of vitamins and possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. A cup of different berries makes the perfect snack, and you can also add them to oatmeal, cottage cheese, salads, and smoothies.

3. Yogurt

It’s thought that yogurt can relieve sugar cravings by increasing the number of good bacteria in your gut. Choose plain yogurt over flavored one and add some sweetness to it by mixing some fruits or berries in it.

Other fermented foods, such as kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi can provide the same effect.

4. Dark chocolate

If you are going to eat chocolate, opt for the kind that is the most beneficial. Dark chocolate contains polyphenols, which are antioxidants that can improve heart health and brain function. Choose chocolate with cocoa content of 70% and higher.

5. Sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a good source of slow-release carbs that can help keep you full for longer. Roast sweet potatoes with herbs and spices for added taste and benefits.

6. Herbal teas

Infusions with an intense taste (such as peppermint or ginger) can help you stay hydrated and fight off sugar cravings. If your cravings are caused by a lack of sleep, opt for a calming infusion that can help you sleep better, such as chamomile tea.

7. Trail mix

Trail mix is a snack food that consists of dried fruits and nuts. There are different varieties of this food and it makes a good nutritious snack between main meals. But you have to keep in mind the fact that trail mix is high in calories, so eat only a handful at a time.
