Emma Thompson In 'Love Actually' Was Inspired By Her Cheating Husband Kenneth Branagh

News

Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham-Carter's affair was responsible for the dissolution of actress Emma Thompson’s marriage in 1995. The couple fell in love on the set of BBC’s "Fortunes of War."

Helena Bonham-Carter and Branagh met on set in 1994. She played Branagh's love interest in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. By 1995, Thompson walked out of her marriage of six years.

Motivation for her outstanding performance

It took 17 years for Thompson to finally speak about her divorce. Just after the separation, Thompson suffered a major bout of depression.

But Thompson was not one to be bogged down by her personal problems. Instead, she channeled the anger and pain she felt towards Branagh into her work. Thompson’s portrayal of her character in Richard Curtis’s romantic comedy Love Actually was inspired by her life story.

I’ve had so much bloody practice at crying in a bedroom, then having to go out and be cheerful, gathering up the pieces of my heart and putting them in a drawer.

After the divorce, Branagh dated Helena for three years. Thompson said she was devastated due to the affair. She even worked with Helena in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II."

And Thompson maintains that there is no animosity between her and Helena.

You can’t hold on to anything like that. It’s pointless. I haven’t got the energy for it. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago. She’s a wonderful woman.
