Queen Elizabeth II Reveals Affair Between Princess Margaret And A Man 17 Years Her Junior
Princess Margaret was married to ace photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones for nearly two decades. However, their relationship stood out for several reasons.
Antony Armstrong-Jones did not belong to royals.
Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones were blessed with two children. However, their relationship was not particularly happy. By 1976, they were divorced.
Their separation was another relatively memorable event. Since 1901, there were not royal divorces. Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh got divorced from her husband Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine.
Queen Elizabeth II speaks about the affair
In the 1970’s, Princess Margaret had an affair with Roddy Llewellyn (now Sir Roderic Victor "Roddy" Llewellyn, 5th Baronet). She was still married to Antony Armstrong-Jones at the time. Llewellyn was 17 years younger than the princess, but it seems that age was not a deterrent to their relationship.
Roddy Llewellyn was introduced to Princess Margaret by Lady Anne Glenconner. And soon after the funeral of Princess Margaret, the Queen said to Lady Anne:
I’d just like to say, Anne, it was rather difficult at moments, but I thank you so much introducing Princess Margaret to Roddy ‘cause he made her really happy’.
Royal passes on
Princess Margaret was ill for most of the latter part of her life. After suffering a mild stroke in 1998, she finally gave up in 2002 at the age of 71.
She was succeeded by her children, Lady Sarah Chatto and David Armstrong-Jones, the second Earl of Snowdon.
