The Wedding Singer is still considered to be a favorite romantic comedy for many people. It grossed $80 million in the U.S. and more than $123 million worldwide, which Frank Coraci, a director, calls the "the ultimate compliment".

In his exclusive interview with E! News, Coraci told:

A lot of magic happened on the movie. We had no idea, by the way, that it was gonna be a success [when we were making it]. Nothing like that had ever hit that big, and Drew hadn't been in a big movie in a while...she really hadn't gotten to be funny at that point...Adam had some good little movies that did well, but [The Wedding Singer] took us to the next level.

Sandler had been a famous goofball, so playing a lead in a romantic comedy was a new challenge for him.

At the time, everyone was questioning, 'Is Adam a leading man?  I had no doubt that he would be a great leading man. I knew he was charming and funny—it was definitely the right place for him to go next.

At first, they didn’t have an actress to play Julia in mind, it was a big part, so it had to go to the right person. But everyone seemed to agree that 22-year-old Barrymore would be the best choice.

Sandler and Barrymore's onscreen chemistry turned into a real-life friendship. They reunited on the set of 50 First Dates in 2004 and Blended in 2014.

Drew even dedicated one chapter of her book, Wildflower, which was released in 2015, to Sandler. As the actress explains, it’s “a little bit of a love letter to him because I have grown with this person."

She also pointed out on The Tonight Show in 2014:

Every 10 years we get to fall in love again.

How sweet is that?
