The Queen's consent

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will marry on May 19 at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle in London. On March 14, the Queen Elizabeth II finally gave her formal consent for Prince Harry to marry the former star of TV series Suits. The Declaration says:

MY LORDS, I declare My Consent to a Contract of Matrimony between My Most Dearly Beloved Grandson Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales and Rachel Meghan Markle, which Consent I am causing to be signified under the Great Seal and to be entered in the Books of the Privy Council.

Favoritism or something else?

As we can see, the Queen called her future granddaughter-in-law simply by her name “Rachel Meghan Markle.” However, back in 2011, when she gave her consent for Prince William to marry, she called Kate “Our Trusty and Well-beloved Catherine Elizabeth Middleton.” Does this means the Queen likes Kate more than Meghan?

Actually, the difference means something but not necessarily the Queen’s favoritism. The language “Our Trusty and Well-beloved” is reserved for all the UK citizens. As Meghan has citizenship of the United States, she doesn’t qualify.

The Royal Marriages Act of 1772 states that the monarch has to give their consent for the marriage. Otherwise, it isn’t legally approved.

Favorite Prince Harry

Although the Queen seems to be unbiased regarding Kate and Meghan, we all know for sure that her favorite grandchild is Prince Harry. The reason behind it is most likely the death of Princess Diana. The Queen felt she needed to take mother-like protective responsibilities. Ever since, she has been supporting young Harry.
