But the pair worked very well together and captivated the viewers with their natural chemistry. As it turned out, they wasn’t faking it as they’ve been seriously dating for quite some time now.

The ice dancing duo opened up about their love life in the interview before the Olympics, revealing that they were initially competitors before they were stricken with love outside of the rink.

Who are Madison Chock and Evan Bates?

The Michigan-based partners both started skating form a young age. Madison, whose middle name La'akea -"sacred light from heaven" and Te-Lan  - "unique orchid", began skating when she was 5 years old and moved to the ice rink at the age of 12. Evan competed for the first time at the age of 5.

He told NBC Olympics:

I remember being in my first ice show, dressed as a leprechaun. I was 5 years old and I was so nervous that I wet myself, right down my green pants. That certainly was not the moment that propelled me to dedicate my life to skating.

The couple enjoys spending time together off the ice, their favorite thing to do is yoga. Madison says that it challenges the body in a relaxing way.

From rivals to lovers on ice

Madison, 25, and Evan, 28, teamed up in 2011 and began dating in 2016. Bates says:

Maddie and I met and we were competitors for a long time. Then, even when we started skating together, we were just friends at first. We had a really good relationship and just as we got older, we sort of fell in love on the ice and realized that we should be together.

Chock also comments:

We go through everything together; all the highs and all lows. You just really have to be on the same page and have the same goals and the same work ethic, which we are fortunate to have and it works really well.

Chock and Bates have found great success as a team over the years, and we hope that the Olympics fall won’t stop the couple to share their beautiful love story as well as show their skills on the ice rink next time.
