While constantly controlling every bite, we can lead us to mental and physical problems. Demi Lovato, a 25-year-old singer, is an eating disorder survivor, and she knows all about the effect of diets on health.

Demi recently took to Twitter to declare that she is quitting dieting and excepting her body. She then explained her decision to her fans and followers:

Lovato hopes that her fans will follow her footsteps and stop playing games with their health. Depriving ourselves of food and needed nutrients will do no good to our bodies. Moreover, it’s been proven that most diets don’t work.

In 2007, UCLA meta-analysis discovered that there are high chances for most people who go on diets to regain the weight they lost and even gain more after finishing the diet. Also, according to Healthline, some diets can increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease. They can also trigger eating disorders.

So, it seems that Demi made the right choice. Earlier, she talked about her struggles with an eating disorder and the desire to be perfect all the time.

She captured this photo with:

So, I’m insecure about my legs in this picture but I’m posting it because I look so happy and this year I’ve decided I’m letting go of my perfectionism and embracing freedom from self criticism. Learning to love my body the way it is is challenging but life changing. Giving up my eating disorder has been the most challenging journey of my life but I work every day towards solid recovery even if I mess up sometimes. Today I’m feeling strong. You all can do it too. It IS possible. Thank you God for this new chapter in my life.

After making her decision of stopping dieting, Demi feels good. In her interview with PEOPLE, she said:

It’s a daily battle. Some days I feel great and some days I don’t feel great. And sometimes it’s periods of times. I stopped dieting and have gained a little weight so it’s been a struggle but at the same time, I’m happier because I’m not restricting myself from certain foods and I’m no longer food shaming myself.

Way to go, Demi!
