Maryland High School’s Resource Officer Was Hailed As “A True Hero” After Shooting

Officials from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that a shooting had taken place at Great Mills High School in Maryland. 17-year-old Austin Wyatt Rollins was identified as the shooter.

The incident took place in a hallway. Rollins shot at a 16-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy before being apprehended by school resource officer, Blaine Gaskill.

Prompt action stopped the shooter

Gaskill was alerted to the sound of gunfire. Subsequently, he quickly rushed to the scene within seconds. The shooter let off another shot at the same time as Gaskill. However, the resource officer’s shot more precisely.

Consequently, Rollins fell dead after being hit. What may have turned out to be a much larger incident was contained just moments before it began. For the most part, it is all thanks to officer Gaskill's quick response.

Gaskill is a local hero

Students, parents, and countless people on the internet have been sending in their gratitude to officer Gaskill. In particular, his quick thinking helped save the lives of the students involved in the shooting.

Jaelynn Willey has been identified as the 16-year-old student who was shot. She remains hospitalized and in critical condition. In the meantime, classmates have described her as a “dedicated student”. Everyone at the school and her family wish her speedy recovery.
