Date March 7, 2018

Chinese President Xi Jinping is making some big changes in the country’s constitution in order to allow him to be the president for life. Donald Trump praised President Xi’s attempt to stay in power indefinitely and joked he might do the same.

Trump made his remarks at a fundraising lunch in Mar-a-Lago golf club on Saturday during the closed-door conversation. He said:

He’s now president for life. President for life. No, he’s great. And look, he was able to do that. I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll have to give that a shot someday.

It was probably said in a humorous way, but President Trump, who has a history of admiring dictators, caused a lot of concern by his words.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders commented on the situation in China during a meeting with the US governors on Monday. She said that it’s China’s decision to make about what’s best for their country.

President Xi is not the only country leader, whom Trump has praised. He reportedly complimented Russian President Vladimir Putin’s leadership skills in late 2015.

He also has been friendly with the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, praising his “unbelievable job on the drug problem.” The Philippine President has murdered thousands of people in his drug war.

Axios correspondent Jonathan Swan reported earlier that Donald Trump has expressed his approval for countries where drug dealers are punished by the death penalty and wished it could be the same in the US.
