'The Greatest Showman' Star Keala Settle Wows With Incredible Performance Of 'This Is Me' At The Oscars

Date March 7, 2018

This may be the first time Keala Settle performed on the Oscars stage, but the bearded lady from The Greatest Showman made sure that everyone at the theater could feel every note of her breathtaking performance.

Hawaii-born actress and singer is a Broadway veteran. For her role of Norma Valverde in Hands on a Hardbody, she earned nominations for many awards, including Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

In 2017, Settle played Lettie Lutz, a bearded lady, in the musical drama film The Greatest Showman, which is inspired by the story of American businessman P. T. Barnum and his creation of Barnum & Bailey Circus.

The song "This Is Me" from the musical, which is performed by Keala Settle, won the 2018 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Keala in a beautiful glittery blue gown stepped on stage to perform the song, backed by a chorus of singers.

Settle revealed that “This Is Me” has a special meaning to her. The song helped her overcome personal battles with body image issues and feelings of unworthiness. She told:

I learned not to give power to that doubt and that insecurity anymore. Everybody has those feelings. So it made me step up. That fight will always be something I struggle with, but each time I sing, it gets easier. I can’t really do that bullying anymore and I’m grateful of that.

Although Settle didn't bring the Oscar home, she has earned plenty of praise for her performance:

For songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, this victory would have been the second in their career as they took the Oscar home last years for La La Land song “City of Stars.”
