It is no surprise that some dog lovers just want more of their pets. And that is the case of media billionaire Barry Diller and wife Diane von Fürstenberg. Gently, they cloned their dog, a Jack Russell terrier named Shannon.

Bring in the clones

Music and pop culture icon Barbra Streisand lost her beloved Coton du Tulear Samantha in November 2017. The dog was 14 at the time. But before the pooch passed on, Streisand had DNA extracted from the dog’s mouth and stomach.

This was used to create two clones of Samantha. She named them adorable twins, Miss Violet and Miss Scarlett. The dogs looked so alike, she had to dress them in different colors to tell them apart.

Samantha was always with Streisand everywhere she went. She attended most shows with the singer, and it is expected that Miss Violet and Miss Scarlett will follow suit.

PETA says STOP!

PETA’s president Ingrid Newkirk maintains that cloning pets is not a very good idea. According to her, only the physical characteristics of cloned pets are transferred. The personalities of the new pets are different. So, the idea of holding on to a dead pet is false.

Instead, she suggests people adopt dogs in shelters as an alternative to cloning as in the end, having a pet is really about showing love.
