It looks like we still have so much to discover in a galaxy far, far away. And according to Lucasfilm's recent announcement, we will have a chance to continue this fascinating journey. The company is about to add a whole new chapter to the long-lasting Star Wars franchise. Furthermore, they have already signed up Rian Johnson – the mastermind behind The Last Jedi – for the new project.

Exploring the galaxy further

Rian Johnson is going to create a completely separate story with new heroes, new adventures, and unexplored locations. The plot will have little to nothing in common with the latest Skywalker trilogy. On the contrary, it will focus on the events that took place in the parts of the galaxy that were not explored in any previous parts of the franchise.

It is also said that alongside creating the new saga from the scratch, Rian Johnson will work on the first movie as both writer and director. Furthermore, Lucasfilm confirmed that Ram Bergman who produced The Last Jedi will also join the future project.

Back to it!

While we do not have any release dates for the new series so far, it is very unlikely that Lucasfilm will start working on it before finishing the ongoing Skywalker saga. And the official release of its last chapter – Episode IX – is a little over two years away.

Earlier, the company confirmed that the project will have J.J. Abrams on board as a director of the movie. Abrams is responsible for creating the Skywalker saga in the first place. Also, he worked on the trilogy's first film – the 2015's The Force Awakens.

Look at this sweetheart. Big thanks to everyone at D23 today! #thelastjedi

The world will see the premiere of The Last Jedi on December 15, 2017. We really hope that afterward, Rian Johnson will have enough time to focus on creating new fabulous adventures for the fans of the legendary franchise.
