'The Simpsons' Promised To Donate $25,000 To Help Puerto Rico In Dealing With The Aftermath Of Hurricane Maria

News

What started with a small gesture of support, led to the campaign to assist the citizens of Puerto Rico in dealing with the consequences of Hurricane Maria.

Supporting each other in the hardest of times

Back in October, The Simpsons sent a short message of support to the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Carmen Yulín Cruz. They made a large poster with all of the show's main characters standing together and holding a flag of Puerto Rico. Behind the flag, there was Marge Simpson with a small sign that reads “United” in Spanish.

Apparently, that sweet gesture touched the heart of the mayor of San Juan. The woman even posted a photo of a special gift from The Simpsons on Twitter, accompanying the picture with a few words of gratitude.

Contributing even more

What happened next was a bit unexpected although it was a nice surprise. On November 3rd, 2017, just a few days after Carmen Yulín Cruz wrote her message to The Simpsons on Twitter, the show released a short video with one of the cartoon's main characters – Moe Szyslak.

The video looked pretty much like a part of a regular episode of the show, with some of the Springfield citizens hanging out at Moe’s Tavern. The clip begins with Moe reading Carmen Yulín's message and wiping his tears away. Then, the man makes a promise to send $25,000 to Puerto Rico relief efforts, but of course, he does it in a usual comic manner of the show.

In the end of the message, Moe points out at the information about the most common ways people can join the movement and help people in Puerto Rico: One America Appeal, Save the Children, and UNICEF. It is noteworthy that the same information was present on the posters that the show released earlier.

Many people on social media loved both Moe's touching message and the contribution the show promised to make to help Puerto Ricans.

Puerto Rico is one of the territories that suffered the most from the recent hurricanes Irma and Maria. According to CSIS, almost 3.5 millions of Puerto Ricans were forced to leave their homes. The territory still works hard to recover from the aftermath of the bad weather. Many celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez and Elon Musk, joined forces to help the victims of the hurricanes in Puerto Rico and the U.S.
