'Roseanne' Is Back On ABC, But What Happened To Jackie's Son Andy?
Roseanne is back with a bang and already pulling in massive numbers in viewership. There was some speculation about the comeback though. Some critics felt the 20-year break may have been a little too long. However, reception is proving the doubters wrong.
The season premiere on March 27 recorded 18.44 million viewers with an additional 6.6 million in daytime viewing. Aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gives the revival an approval rating of 82%. ABC has already commissioned another season with 13 episodes.
Roseanne has also broken several records. It is currently the highest rated sitcom to broadcast in the past three years. After 7 days of delayed viewing, the show clocked 27.26 million views. This is the largest-ever Total Viewer L+7 increase for any single telecast on any network.
What happened to Andy?
Many of the original cast members returned to the revival, but Andy is missing. Laurie Metcalf's character, Jackie Harris, gave birth to Andy in Season 6.
However, he has not featured in the new season. During the 2018 Winter TCA press tour, Roseanne Barr offered an explanation for Andy’s absence.
We haven't dealt with Andy, Laurie's son, yet. But we had so many stories to tell over the arc of these nine episodes that we were hoping for another season to bring more clarity to those characters.
Andy was played by fraternal twins Garrett and Kent Hazen from 1994. By the end of the series in 1997, identical twins Tyler and Trevor Battaglia took over the role.
Neither of the twins have been contacted yet about making an appearance on the show though. And all of them have moved on to other careers besides acting. But as Roseanne suggests, there may be room for Andy in the next 13 episodes.
Fans are upset about the latest episode
Even with the high ratings, some fans are not entirely pleased with the latest episode of Roseanne. And most of the concerns raised are about her position on spanking and parenting.
On the old #Roseanne they did an ep where she spanked DJ, then felt awful & talked to him about how her Dad used to abuse her & she didn’t want to do that to him. It was so sweet. On last night’s ep she talks about how parents should spank their kids. Makes no sense.

I realize I'm pretty new to parenting and all, but I feel pretty confident that if any family member shoved my daughter's head in a sink and called her a bitch, they'd be dead to me. That this as played as a "tough love" lesson in the new Roseanne is, well, that's something.

So week 2 didn’t impress as much. #Roseanne talked about spanking kids when in the original she swore she’d never do it due to her and Jackie’s horrible upbringing. Also took a weird turn when she called her granddaughter a bitch.
