The former president and husband of Barbara Bush who passed on April 17 at 92 looked to be in good health on Saturday, April 21, for the funeral at the St. Martin's Episcopal Church.

He, however, briefly broke down in tears, while Jeb Bush read a moving eulogy for his mom.

The family was joined by former presidential families: the Clintons, the Obamas, and Melania Trump. The current President Donald Trump was absent.

The recently bereaved husband succumbed to infections that led to sepsis just a day after the funeral. The family spokesman, Jim McGrath, informed about this on Monday in a statement.

He added that Bush was responding to treatment and appears to be recovering.

A source close to Bush also confirmed that he is stable. He revealed that the former president's blood pressure dropped to concerning levels before he was stabilized.

According to CNN chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the sudden infection may not be unconnected with his recent loss.

Right after a big loss -- certainly like he has had -- there is some data that shows that some people can develop problems with immunity and become more susceptible to infections," Gupta told CNN.

Heartfelt reactions

Both Barbara and George Bush had shared a love that lasted a lifetime. They were married for 73 years, the longest in America's presidential history.

Well wishes have continued to come from a cross section of people online. We wish the former president speedy recovery.
