All through the week, tributes have been coming in; all of them are full of praise for the matriarch who left her mark in the American political landscape. She had been treating an autoimmune disorder amid increasing concerns about her failing health by members of her family.
She passed on after she opted out of medical treatment in preference for comfort care.
It has since been announced that Barbara will be buried over the weekend in Houston's College Station on the family plot next to Robin who died of leukemia at age 3 in 1953.
Current American President, Donald Trump, was swift to pay his tribute to the stalwart when news of her passing broke. But a recently released statement by the White House has made it clear that he would not be attending the funeral.
@FLOTUS Melania and I join the Nation in celebrating the life of Barbara Bush. As a wife, mother, grandmother, military spouse, and former First Lady, Mrs. Bush was an advocate of the American family. Amongst her greatest achievements was recognizing the importance of literacy as a fundamental family value that requires nurturing and protection. She will be long remembered for her strong devotion to country and family, both of which she served unfailingly well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mrs. Bush. ????George H. W. Bush Library.
Trump is known to have had constant one-sided clashes with the Bush family during his 2016 campaign. He frequently referred to the second Bush son who served as Governor of Florida, Jeb Bush, as 'low-energy Jeb'. And he was very critical of the first Bush son, George W. Bush, for his handling of the Iraq war.
The White House said Melania Trump would represent her husband to avoid "disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush Family".
During the burial weekend, Trump will be at his Florida estate, and people online have been making their opinions about the president.
Criticism of Trump is almost unanimous, and a few people think Melania should stay away as well.
During her lifetime, Barbara Bush did not think highly of Trump. She is known to have called him a showman in a 2016 interview.
