'I Tried My Best': Fergie Apologizes For Controversial National Anthem Performance At NBA All-Star Game

For many people, Fergie is a beautiful and talented singer; however, her recent attempt to perform the US National Anthem was not so good.
Worst rendition ever?
The NBA All-Star Game took place this past weekend, and Fergie agreed to be the performer to kick off the event by singing the national anthem. The singer stepped up to the mic looking super stunning in a little black dress.
She decided to do things a little bit differently by offering some sort of bluesy rendition of the song.
And judging by the immediate reactions on Twitter, people were definitely not feeling it.

Fergie's national anthem finished 30 minutes ago and I still haven't recovered. A part of me will never be the same.

I’ve seen the national anthem performed hundreds of times but never in the key of “Happy Birthday Mr. President” congrats @Fergie ????????????????????????

Not sure what Fergie was going for on that national anthem performance but if it was “my friends drunk mom acting sexy” she nailed it.

'I honestly tried my best'
The persistent social media attack must have gotten to the singer because she later came out to apologize for her 'unique' performance.
In a statement made available to PEOPLE, she said:
I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA. I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly, this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.
Roseanna Barr slams Fergie
Many people who did not like Fergie's rendition compared it to Roseanne Barr's performance in 1990.
Barr's version, which she sang at a Padre's game, was massively criticized, and even George H.W Bush described it as "disgraceful".
But despite Barr's infamous performance, the actress was still able to joke that she did a much better job than Fergie did during the weekend. In a tweet, she said:
I think mine was better lowkey [sic].
Well, while we might not necessarily agree with that, it's pretty cool to see that Barr still has a sense of humor about the whole thing.
We do hope Fergie does not feel too badly though. All she wanted was to do something different, and the fact remains, it takes a lot of courage to face a crowd and take a big risk such at this. So, we certainly applaud her bold move.
