Manushi Chhillar, 20, a medical student from India, has been named Miss World 2017 and has become the 6th Indian winner of the famous prestigious beauty pageant.
Her triumph in this year's ceremony, held in China, marks the new level for India, which is now rivaling Venezuela in the number of crowns received over the contest’s history, with both countries holding six victories.
Apart from being a medical student, Manushi Chhillar is a gifted painter, poet, and Kuchipudi dancer. Her aspiration is to become a cardiac surgeon and open a chain of non-profit hospitals in rural areas.
After having been crowned, Chhillar tweeted:
Thank you, everyone, for your constant love, support and well wishes.
Being concentrated on her studies, Manushi has always wanted to participate in one of the beauty contests, too. She said:
I was always focused on my studies and wanted to be a doctor, but I would also dream to be at a beauty pageant at least once in life.
The girl was really determined to win in the Miss India contest, so she started working out before and after the classes, juggling the preparations with studying till late night.
Good morning everyone ???? Zhou Shan Hao! Today is the finale of the 67th @missworld ! I cannot express how happy I am to be a part of this journey. I have met so many beautiful people and made great memories. Can’t wait for all of you to witness the show the whole team has worked so hard to put together!
Having been born in the family of doctors, Manushi attended St. Thomas School in Delhi. It gave her the confidence she found necessary for the beauty contest. The girl is the only one in the family who does something other than the medicine. She says:
I come from a family where people believe in education, and they don't really step out into any big entertainment related industry or beauty pageants. I am the first one from my family and friends to step into the world.

Standing at the platform to claim the title of Miss world 2017, competing with 120 equally talented candidates from various countries is both fun and stress requiring extreme perseverance, stamina, vigour and motivation. Since her birth, I have witnessed her always on the move. I know, title of Miss world 2017 is another milestone for her and I am sure, she will not stop at it." @missworld @missindiaorg
The 20-year-old beauty also works on the “Project Shakti,” which aims at creating opportunities for rural women and give them financial empowerment. Chillar has visited 20 villages, trying to make the world a better place for these women. She proudly says:
The cause is close to my heart, and in my own way, I have managed to make a difference in the lives of about 5,000 women.
Manushi’s answer that seems to have brought her the crown at the pageant was to the question of the judges about the profession that deserves the highest salary. The girl replied:
I think a mother is of the highest respect. I don’t think it’s just about cash, but love and respect she gives to someone. She is the biggest inspiration in my life. A mother should get highest salary and respect.
For India, this victory is a massive win. It comes 17 years after Priyanka Chopra won the Miss World crown, in 2000. Chopra is a superstar in India, and she is also well-known in Hollywood. Another beauty, who has won the crown in 1994, was Aishwarya Rai. Being well-known all over the world, she is a successful actress and continues using her fame for good causes.
