Later, the actor confessed he would never forgot the moment when his father came to see him on stage and after that he awarded little Kirk with an ice-cream. It was one of the brightest events from the actor’s childhood.

But Douglas had to put aside his dream to become an actor at least for a while. Due to the poor financial condition, the boy had to earn money to help his family. Kirk worked as a waiter, dishwasher, and security guard. But thanks to his great ability to work hard and his desire to get the necessary education, Douglas became a student of American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Kirk's long life and achievements

At the beginning of his onstage career, Douglas appeared in numerous Broadway performances. But then he had to serve in the army during WW II. After he finished his military service, Douglas decided to continue his acting career but it was not so simple. The actor had a lot of auditions but didn’t get the roles until his close friend, Lauren Bacall, put a word for him to a producer of The Strange Loves of Martha Ivers.
