She loved her with all her heart and more

Dana Elaine Owens (Queen Latifah) paid an emotional tribute to her late mother with the heartwarming words:

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news my mother, Rita Owens passed away today. Anyone that has ever met her knows what a bright light she was on this earth. She was gentle, but strong, sweet, but sassy, worldy but pragmatic, a woman of great faith and certainly the love of my life. She had struggled with a heart condition for many years and her battle is now over. I am heartbroken but know she is at peace. Thank you for your kindness, support and respect for our privacy at this time.

The long-lasting battle with the disease

Rita Owens was diagnosed with heart failure in 2004. It is known that more than 5 million Americans suffer from the disease. Heart failure basically means that a person’s heart cannot pump blood efficiently enough. The daughter immediately decided to become her caregiver.

Queen Latifah’s mother managed to live with the condition for 13 years thanks to the healthy nutrition, medication, a chest defibrillator, and of course, her daughter.

In 2016, Queen Latifah together with her mom starred in a public service announcement to support all the people living with the condition and raise the awareness of heart diseases.

Queen Latifah was overwhelmed by emotions and posted a touching collage of her mother on Instagram.

People all over the world send their condolences, and so do we. We are praying for the family. Thank you, Rita Owens, for bringing the queen to the world. Rest in peace.
