The web television series The Handmaid's Tale, produced by Bruce Miller, is based on the novel of the same title by Margaret Atwood.

A summary of season one and the movie plot

The series is set in the near future where there is a drastic decrease in fertility rate due to sexually transmitted diseases and environmental pollution.

After the second civil war, the government of Gilead takes over the United States. At this time, a law is passed that forbids women from working, reading, holding money, or owning property. Due to infertility, the few fertile women are sold as ‘handmaids’ into elite households and forced to bear children for their masters and their wives.

In this newly formed society, women are divided into social classes that include: handmaids, Marthas, wives, econowives, aunts, and Jezebels. Each social class is characterized by a colored dress. The handmaids are the fertile women, and they wear red, the wives wear blue, and Marthas green.

The Handmaid's Tale: Golden Globe Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, and others

The series received positive reviews and garnered the attention of viewers with the season one. It went on to win Best Drama Series at the 75th Golden Globe Awards and also the 23rd annual Critics’ Choice Award for the same category.

Elizabeth Moss won the Emmy Award for Best Actress in a drama series for playing June in the series. The season one was a huge hit with viewers and fans can't wait to get started with season two.

Season two: a few spoilers and what to expect

Hulu has announced that the season two premiere is set for April, and has released an official trailer for it. From hints dropped by makers of the show, here's what to expect from The Handmaid's Tale this time.

1. A huge surprise in the opening scene.

According to Elizabeth Moss, the opening scene of season two is sure to take viewers by surprise. She says:

Don't try to guess what happens in that first scene of episode one in season two, you will never get it, and I mean that objectively as a viewer. You just won't guess, and I love that so much.

It looks like we just have to wait and see.

2. The casts will be returning.

Fans have been curious if the whole cast will gather for the second season and according to Miller, this is what we definitely can expect.

3. A more feisty June.

Looks like June is about to get rebellious this time around. Following her refusal to stone Janine in the previous season's finale, there's more of feisty June in store for the new episodes as Miller said to Entertainment Weekly:

Season 2 is what happens after you become a little rebellious.

4. A peek into the colonies.

The colonies, which are where infertile women are sent to clean radioactive waste, will be shown more. So the lives and fate of these women will be explored more now.

5. The Waterfords are not going anywhere.

After Nick took pregnant June from their household in the season one finale, that's not the end. We'll definitely be seeing more of the Waterfords in season two and more of Fred and his commander duties.

6. Say goodbye to a handmaid.

One handmaid is definitely going to die in season two as a scene from the trailer shows the handmaids attending a funeral.

7. Season two promises to be darker.

Think you've seen it all in season one? Hold on to your seats because according to Moss, the new episodes will take a darker turn.

8. Alexis Bledel as a full-time cast member.

Alexis who played Emily in episode 7 of season one will be returning as full cast member, says Hulu. So we'll definitely be seeing more of Emily.

9. A love triangle in the making.

According to what Moss told ELLE.com:

She's in this position where she might be in love with two people, ... I think she does love Nick — if I can speak for her — but I don't know if she knows that she does, yet. But she has a husband who she also loves, who's the father of Hannah, who she also now knows is alive. It's the most complicated Real Housewives episode you've ever seen.

Last time we saw June, she was with Nick and pregnant with his child and at the same time, Luke was trying to find her.

10. Mayday might not be in June's best interest.

According to Miller:

Mayday is not the Handmaid rescue organization — it’s the anti-Gilead organization, And the anti-Gilead organization is not necessarily a friend to June or a friend to Handmaids. If I was going to try to hurt Gilead, the first thing I might do is kill all the Handmaids. You’re trying to weaken the state.

So, there it is. Check out the official trailer for few scenes from season two. For sure, fans are eagerly waiting for the premiere.
