"I struggled mentally through the adoption process”

Charlize Theron technically raises her kids on her own, but she doesn’t feel like a single mom. In 2012 and 2015, the actress adopted two wonderful kids – her son Jackson and daughter August.

Charlize, who grew up in South Africa, always dreamed of having a big family with many siblings. When Charlize was a little girl, she even had written a letter to the orphanage because she wanted a brother or sister.

Maybe for this reason, Theron decided she wants to adopt her children. In an interview with ELLE magazine, the Hollywood icon explained:

I was always aware that there are so many children in this world who don't have families. Adoption is a very personal thing. But for me—I never saw a difference in raising an adopted child versus my own biological child.

The adoption process was not the easiest one for Charlize, as both of her kids are from another country. They were born in South Africa. The actress says she understands the importance of talking with her children about their background.

They need to know where they come from and be proud of that.

Her biggest supporter is her mom

Though Charlize is a single mom, she doesn’t feel that way. The star said that while she doesn’t have a staff of 40 like people may think, she’s learned when to ask for help. Her biggest supporter is her own mother.

Soon afterward, Charlize understood she would need her mom help her, but at first, she had no idea how complicated it is to be a single parent.

In the beginning, I wanted to do it all and didn’t reach out for as much help as I actually needed. I felt if I don’t do all of this, then maybe I am a bad parent. The second time, I realized I am happier and my kids are happier if I ask for more help.

Today, Charlize says she can’t imagine her life without her children and hopes her example will change someone’s opinion about the difficulties of being a single parent.
