Tommy and Maryanne: love what matters

Tommy and Maryanne Pilling were born with Down syndrome. They met 24 years ago and soon after began dating. After one year, Tommy decided to propose to his lovebird. At that time, the man didn’t have enough money to buy Maryanne an engagement ring. So, he bought a plastic ring instead.

Maryanne was impressed by Tommy’s creativity. Of course, she said “Yes.” This year, the happy couple celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary.

Tommy and Maryanne struggled through many difficulties during these years. Tommy underwent a cataract surgery, and the pair moved to Maryanne’s mother for three weeks until he recovered.

Tommy calls his wife his biggest supporter in life. This year, on March 21, Tommy celebrated his 60th birthday.

The Pillings got used to hearing offensive comments from people who couldn’t believe their marriage would last long because of their special condition. The couple proved the haters were wrong.
