Tyra Banks: the dark side of glory

Tyra Banks got used to people talking about her figure. During her career as a model, Tyra faced bullying from haters who called her ‘too thin or too big’ for the industry.

In her memoir Perfect Is Boring, Banks talks about the challenges of being a body positive model.

I used to feel like my body was not mine. And I used to feel like I was betraying people if I lost weight.

It took several years before Banks learned to love and accept her own body. When the supermodel has just started her path to success, she was rejected multiple times by outstanding fashion brands who called her ‘too curvy.’

But Tyra didn’t give up. She knew that someday, people will appreciate her hard work and efforts. So, it did happen when Banks signed a contract with one of the highest profile magazines - Sports Illustrated. She appeared on the magazine cover when she was 23.

Banks often said that she got tired of numerous critics judging her body shape. But the best thing is that fashion industry changes all the time, and today, not just thin models are considered to be icons of beauty.

I’m happy that the fashion industry is finally catching up. What I’m hoping for is that the Ashley Graham‘s, the Gigi  Hadid‘s, everyone is just models. Not plus, not short, not trans, not curvy. I just want it to be normal.

Did you lose weight, Tyra?

Around nine months ago, Tyra Banks surprised her fans and fashion critics with her new body look. The matter is that, Tyra lost more than 30 lbs. Now, the star weights 155 lbs.

However, Banks revealed she didn’t plan to lose weight because she was ashamed of her appearance or whatever. The reason was her health issues. When 10 months ago, Tyra visited a doctor for an ankle injury, she was told that only losing weight would help her recover completely. Banks explained:

Now I’m a different body type. But I don’t feel like I’m betraying people. I’ve still got boobs!
