Ames McNamara is happy to be back to Roseanne in the show reboot. The young actor says he is having so much fun since joining the "Roseanne" family. In a recent interview at Good Morning America, Ames speaks about the topics which are not childish at all, in particular, about his gender non-conforming character.
Ames speaks about gender identity
Since Roseanne’s huge come back on screen, fans just can’t get enough of learning more little-known facts about their favorite stars.
One of the youngest members of the Roseanne cast, Ames McNamara, revealed some interesting information about his onscreen character. In the show, Ames plays Mark, Darlene's gender non-conforming son.
As a guest star at Good Morning America, McNamara gets candid about his character. The boy confessed he didn’t know much about the gender identity before taking the role. He was aware that some men like to wear women’s clothes, but he never actually thought what the term ‘gender identity’ really means.

As far as Mark’s preferences cause controversial feelings in the Conner family, producers of the show decided to make stress on the importance of having conversations with young children about gender identity. His TV mom, Sara Gilbert, says:
He's too young to be gay and he doesn't identify as transgender.
As for his own attitude towards his gender non-conforming character, Ames explained:
Mark's just a normal kid. He likes to do art, he likes playing basketball, and wearing girls' clothes is just a small part of him.
McNamara added that nothing has really changed in his life since his appearance in the series.
I personally don't wear girls' clothes, but I respect anyone who does. I believe that everyone should express themselves however that may be.
After Roseanne reboot, it became obvious that the show has all chances to become one of the most successful comebacks of all times. It’s great that today we have such great TV projects, which are able not just to entertain people but also to raise public awareness about the topics that really matter.
