The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge. - Stephen Hawking

Hawking's terrible disease

Stephen Hawking will be remembered as a genius who didn’t let anything, including his terrible disease, stop him. He has had ALS for more than 50 years, practically his whole adulthood. The scientist had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 1962 and had been said to live only two more years. However, even having his body paralyzed, Stephen managed to live a full life. He had a beautiful family, was extremely successful at his work, and made history!

Stephen's achievements will live forever

Stephen Hawking wrote his bestseller “A Brief History of Time” for the general public to expand our views and knowledge about the universe and space in 1988. Three years earlier, he contracted pneumonia, which left him unable to speak. At first, he communicated with the help of word cards. After a year, computer specialist Walter Woltosz designed a device that could transform his thoughts into a robotic speech by simply pressing a switch to select words from a bank of 3000. The scientist commented:

I can communicate better now than before I lost my voice.

Ever since, he has been using this method to communicate with people. And even though he lost his speech, Stephen Hawking was one of the leading voices in science. His theories helped us understand the world we're living in.

However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up. - Stephen Hawking

People are devastated by the loss and posting tributes all over the world:

The world lost the legend. But Stephen’s contribution to science and his heroic spirit will make him live forever not only in books or movies but also in our hearts and most likely, somewhere out there, in space.
