Judy Garland's Daughter, Lorna Luft, Opened Up About Her Mother's Struggles With Addiction
Judy Garland was the face of the Old Hollywood. Her success in The Wizard of Oz (1939) made the studios tighten their grip on the young actress, and they never let her go.
Her career was filmed with glamour, accolades, and admiration, but it came at a great cost. The times of Old Hollywood were notoriuously rough for its stars. Studios controlled the love of their actors down to every detail. Reportedly, Judy Garland went through two abortions, because those pregnancies came at an inconvenient time in her career.
Ultimately, the pressure from her job led to Judy Garland's problems with alcohol and drug abuse. She passed away at the age of 47 due to overdose.
Growing up with addicted mother
Judy Garland's daughter, Lorna Luft, opened up about what it was like growing up with a drug using mother. She said her dad made her switch Garland's prescription drugs with sugar at a young age. Lorna had to learn how to act around a person struggling with addiction but couldn't help.
She believes that her mother's life, although difficult, shouldn't be called tragic. "I do think my mother was a victim of the studio system," Luft said.
Lorna was 17 when Judy Garland passed away. Unfortunately, having seen what drugs do to people, Luft herself got involved with substances as well. Especially, during the times of Studio 54, notoriously known for its drug-filled celebrity parties.
In the end, the experience with her mother helped Lorna leave her habits in the past. She went through a rehab when she started trying to have children.
Garland's other children
Judy Garland had three children: Lorna Luft, Liza Minelli, and Joey Luft.
All three siblings made careers in show business. Lorna Luft is a very active stage performer. In 2015, she toured with The Songbook of Judy Garland, highlighting her mother's best musical numbers.
Joey Luft is not well known today, but he used to be a famous child performer.
Liza Minelli, perhaps the most famous out of Garland's children, is a Broadway legend. She even won an Academy Award for her role in Cabaret (1972).
Lorna Luft revealed that she is very close with her siblings, and they are extremely proud of their mom's legacy.
