Lucille Ball And Desi Arnaz's Daughter, Lucie, Opens Up About Her Parents' "Rocky" Love Story
We all know Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz didn’t have a perfect marriage. But it’s definitely worth turning into a movie. And quite soon, we will be able to enjoy their story in the film titled Lucy and Desi, which is produced by the couple’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz.
The 66-year-old finally thinks, she can talk about her late dad and mom without feeling as if she’s riding their coattails. Now, she doesn’t miss any opportunity to celebrate them.
As part of the movie, Arnaz hopes to show how Lucille and Desi were raising kids while also starring in TV shows, producing them, and running a production company. The family had always been a priority for the couple. But it didn’t work out because of their careers.
So what does Lucie want to tell about her parents’ love story?
When Desi and Lucille got married, she worked on radio and in movies, while he had a band and traveled a lot. The two didn’t spend much time together, and then Lucille suffered 2 miscarriages.
Finally, after a decade of marriage, the stars welcomed their firstborn. In fact, when they began filming their hit I Love Lucy, Lucille was pregnant with their daughter. So, welcoming a child collided with the success of the show.
As Arnaz reveals, her parents thought they would do the show for a year and then focus on their family and raising kids. But it turned out to be exactly the opposite:
["I Love Lucy"] became the biggest thing ever. So, it was one of those things, ‘Be careful what you wish for’.
Although Desi was notorious for gambling, drinking, and having affairs, he had always wanted to keep the TV business small to make time for their family. On the other hand, Lucille wanted to keep going and bought the studio.
Surely, having Lucie and then welcoming her younger brother, Desi Jr., strengthened the bond between the two. But only for a little while. After 20 years of marriage, Lucille could no longer tolerate her husband’s infidelities and the drinking problem, so she divorced him.
Lucie knows her parents’ love story was complicated and had lots of problems. And she hopes, screenwriters will write it in a sympathetic way, focusing on both the couple’s shortcomings and lasting impacts.
