Prince Charles And Lady Diana Had A Whirlwind Romance Before Getting Married

Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana were one of the most talked about couples in the 80s. Prince Charles was a stunning bachelor and heir to the throne. Diana, at the time, was a teacher’s assistant at a nursery school.

The couple first met in 1977. Diana was 16 at the time, and Prince Charles was dating Diana's elder sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale. The relationship, however, did not last long and Charles moved on.

Prince Charles and Diana met again during a weekend getaway in the English countryside. It was in the summer of 1980. Charles was playing polo and Diana was fascinated by him. The two eventually got to talking and their relationship began soon after.

He proposed after only 12 dates

Prince Charles was clearly considering Diana as a future bride and he made no attempt to hide his affection. He invited her on their first date aboard the royal yacht Britannia, on a weekend trip to Cowes.

Subsequently, Prince Charles invited Diana to Balmoral (the Royal Family's Scottish residence). There he formally introduced Diana to his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. This was in November of 1980.

Prince Charles and Diana went on a couple of more dates that totaled 12 in all. And on the 6th of February, 1981, less than a year after their relationship began, Prince Charles proposed to Diana. Although Diana accepted, their engagement was not made public until 24 February 1981.

Diana seemed excited after the engagement. But there were mixed signals in the air when journalists interviewed the couple. When asked if they were in love, Diana responded "Of course!", cutting short Prince Charles whose response was "Whatever 'in love' means."

Their life together and divorce

Prince Charles and Diana were married in July 1981. The wedding was an elaborate ceremony and had international dignitaries in attendance.

Prince William was born in 1982. Two years later, Prince Harry was born. After that, rumors began to circulate of extra-marital affairs between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles.

A leaked audio recording of a flirty conversation between Prince Charles and Lady Camilla further confirmed the speculations. From then on, the relationship between the royal couple speedily declined.

Princess Diana struggled with bulimia and confessed to having attempted suicide at least five times. This was in her bid to escape the troubles plaguing her relationship with the Prince. By December of 1992, it was obvious the relationship had reached an end.

Prime minister, John Major, made a public statement to the effect that the royal couple were resolved to an "amicable separation". Following an official order by Queen Elizabeth II, their divorce was finalized on Aug. 28, 1996.

Princess Diana earned a special place in the hearts of the people. She was the first non-royal to be married into the British royal family in more than 300 years. The wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana was like a fairytale. But the tragic events that followed made it fall short.
