How Princess Diana Told Young Prince William About His Father's Affair

No mother wants to tell her children that her marriage has come to a heartbreaking end due to infidelity. But that’s what Princess Diana had to do in 1995 after she separated from Prince Charles. She told the news to her eldest son, 13-year-old William, in the sweetest way which probably affected his views on relationships.

The tensions Princess Diana and Prince Charles had, that were hidden from the spotlights, didn’t stay in the shadows for long. Though many people viewed the royal couple's love story as a beautiful fairy tale, they separated in 1992.

There were many rumors circling around them concerning infidelity on both sides, but the most prominent one was about Charles's affair with former girlfriend, Camilla Parker-Bowles. Diana found out about it in 1986, and despite her shyness, confronted Camilla about the affair.

In 1995, Princess Diana did an interview with BBC's Martin Bashir. It was then when she said her famous quote:

There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.

She admitted that she didn’t want to divorce and that she needs some clarity on the situation.

I don't want a divorce, but, obviously, we need clarity on a situation that has been of enormous discussion over the last three years. I await my husband's decision of which way we are all going to go.

She also mentioned that she told William, then 13, about his father's affair.

Diana said:

If you find someone you love in life, you must hang onto it and look after it. And if you are lucky enough to find someone who loves you, then you must protect it.

After the interview, Diana and Charles received letters from the queen requesting their immediate divorce. Almost one year after the divorce, Princess Diana was killed in a car accident.

Judging by the picture-perfect relationship Prince William built with his wife Kate Middleton, we can assume he has taken his mother's advice to heart.
