Reese Witherspoon Talks To Oprah About Her Experience With An Abusive Partner

Reese Witherspoon recently opened up to Oprah Winfrey about walking away from an abusive relationship.

Witherspoon was not alone on Oprah's couch. She appeared on the show with Mindy Kaling. The two women star alongside Oprah in the highly anticipated sci-fi movie, A Wrinkle in Time.

Prompted by the talk show queen, Witherspoon disclosed that the abuse she had gone through was psychological and verbal.  Her decision to leave came after she realized that she could not go any further. According to her:

A line got drawn in the sand and it got crossed, and my brain just switched.


Getting comfortable with sharing her story.

The award-winning actress says she was not always comfortable with talking about what she went through.

Speaking up became necessary because of the bravery of the other women who have been sharing their abusive experiences urged on by the #MeToo movement.

In October 2017, Witherspoon shared an ordeal she had with a director who abused her as far back as when she was 16.


She said, however, that the abusive situations she went through were not isolated events.

Leaving was very empowering.

What is heartening about her story is that these events did not get the better of her.


The Oscar-winning actress, who is 41, has moved on. She has three children. Ava, 18, and Deacon, 14, are from her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. 5-year-old Tennessee is her son with current husband, Jim Toth.

She told Oprah that her experience with the unnamed partner from her past changed her in a fundamental way. Making that decision to leave was very empowering for her.
