Engagement Bands: How They Came About, What They Signify, And What Happens To Them After A Divorce

Date February 1, 2018

Priest: "You may now place the ring on the finger of your beloved bride…"

And the groom ever so solemnly takes the bride’s hand, raises it up, locates the right finger, and slips the ring on.

The woman stares on dreamily, and the story continues …

That round shining object that most women look forward to on their big day has a bit of a history surrounding it.

The tradition of rings

Wedding historian Susan Waggoner captured it aptly when she said that back in the days, engagements rings didn’t imply:

I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.

Rather, it was more of:

I own you just like the cars in my garage.

That's sad but true. Thankfully, “Roman law” took a more civilized approach to the matter when they chose to see this significant ornament as a sort of down payment made to a bride-to-be.

What happens after divorce?

Now, to think about what happens to this artifact after divorce is a bit disconcerting.

Some sell it off to pay pending bills. Others auction it off so that they can donate the proceeds realized to charity. Yet, some others simply get jewelers to rework their prized possession into new pieces after divorce.

Whether they sell it off, auction it, or even engage in a bitter court case over it, the whole drama is an undesirable fiasco. Its a situation no woman hopes to find herself in, especially since the ring is supposed to symbolize “together, forever.”

It is saddening that things can grow awry between a couple who once professed their undying love for each other. It is even worse when those challenges become irresolvable and lead to the end of the union.

While there are several likely options when it comes to what happens to the engagement band afterward, what are your recommendations? What would you rather suggest they did with them?
