Annette Bening And Warren Beatty: Their Love Is A Real-Life Fairytale

Annette Bening was fresh out of a marriage to J. Steven White, the former director of the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. Warren Beatty was Hollywood’s most talked about bachelor and serial dater. From Raquel Welch to Linda McCartney, Diana Ross, Joan Collins, Vivien Leigh, Cher, Natalie Wood, Faye Dunaway, and even Madonna, Warren Beatty had been around.
Still, fate decided that these individuals would meet, he would fall in love, and more than 25 years later, they would still be together. But how did it all begin?
Love at first sight
It was 1991. Warren was gearing up to star in a new film that was an adaptation of the Dean Jennings' book, We Only Kill Each Other: The Life and Bad Times of Bugsy Siegel. The film was Bugsy. The only challenge was that finding a strong female lead to play Virginia Hill had been an elusive feat.
After a first failed attempt at meeting with Annette, Warren found another opportunity later. While having lunch with Annette, Beatty confessed that he could hardly pay attention to much of what she was saying. He was smitten. He was truly in love at first sight.
This marked the start of long and loving relationship. The attraction was however not mutual. Annette confessed:
I didn’t go into that meeting with Warren thinking it would lead to anything personal. I was thinking about the job. I didn’t feel I would spend the rest of my life with him.
The couple got married in 1992. Annette and Warren have four children (Stephen, 24, Benjamin, 22, Isabel, 19, and Ella, 16).
Making the romance last
Being married for as long as this celebrity couple comes with its own challenges. But Warren and Annette have found one thing that makes their marriage tick. They are big on surprises.
Speaking at the premiere of Rules Don’t Apply, which happened to be his first film in 15 years, Warren told PEOPLE, “Every day she surprises me.” Consequently, this statement was quickly echoed by Annette who piped back, “Definitely he surprises me — absolutely. He does the unexpected thing.”
Annette and Warren continue to find new and exciting ways to show how much they care for one another and vouch that this helps maintain relationships for the long haul. It manifests itself in roles that they both take in their movies, including those in which they both feature in.
Their romance may not be an ideal fairytale but it does have some of the stuff fairytales are made of. It has lasted much longer than a lot of Hollywood marriages. In closing, we leave you with this memorable quote to ponder on.
True love stories never have endings.
