Albuquerque Police Officer Adopted An Opioid-Addicted Newborn From Her Homeless Mother

The statistics of maternal opioid use is terrifying: one baby suffering from neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is born approximately every 25 minutes. Just like grown-up addicts, these newborns experience a severe drug withdrawal syndrome in the first few weeks of their life. Along with a serious treatment, these kids require a special care and lots of love. But being born by drug-addicts, kids with NAS usually don't even have the most basic things, such as clean clothing, fresh food, and warm houses to live in. Hope Holets is a fortunate exception from this rule.
